Wayfare Tavern

The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:

Winner.
Everything is delicious, but the bread (popovers), steak tartare and doughnuts are orgasmic!

The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:

I’ve been to Wayfare Tavern a few times now and each time is a great experience. The service has always been good and the decor (both upstairs and downstairs) is so inviting and cozy. I would definitely recommend you make reservations! The attire is casual, I don’t ever see anyone too dressed up, but keep in mind that it’s located in the financial district so by default most people are in business attire.

Hours
Mon – Wed  11am – 10:30pm
Thurs – Fri    11am – 11pm
Sat   11:30am – 11pm
Sun  11:30am – 10pm

What I ate/drank:

  • Cucumber mule ($13)
  • Grilled octopus ($17)
  • Prime beef tartare ($17)
  • Organic fried chicken ($26)
  • Brussels sprouts ($9)
  • House-made doughnuts ($11)

Thoughts?

Wayfare’s version of a moscow mule is delicious! The addition of cucumber is EVERYTHING! You know my love for cucumber drinks and this one passes with flying colors. The ginger beer isn’t too strong and the cucumber flavor is very prevalent. Let’s just say I wouldn’t mind downing a few.

The grilled octopus was good, the pieces were large enough that you could really savor the flavor and the salsa was a welcomed addition.

THIS.BEEF.TARTARE. I must say that it is probably the best I’ve ever had (cue the Drake song). It was so amazingly delicious, I immediately asked the waiter if they serve it for lunch (they do!) because I envisioned myself needing to go back the next day to have some more. If steak tartare is something you enjoy (I know it’s not for everyone), TRY THIS ONE!

Wayfare Tavern is famous mainly for their fried chicken, it’s definitely not the only thing that’s good, but if you ask anyone in the area, whether they’ve been or not, I’m sure they’ve heard of the fried chicken. I love it because 1) it’s a great size (very shareable) 2) it’s delicious and 3) it’s not greasy. The rosemary really takes it up a notch and the outside is so crispy. Love it!

The brussel sprouts were okay, but to be honest I wasn’t in love. Don’t get me wrong, they flavor is really good and one of my dinner mates happened to love them. However, I think the texture was off, the were more mushy than crispy. I might have gotten a bad batch. I did really like the addition of pomegranates, though – the crunch was much appreciated.

These doughnuts were amazing! They are quite sweet, but are great to share. I loved every bite and this is definitely something I will order every time I go.

I can’t not mention the popovers, this is the bread that Wayfare Tavern passes out to every table and trust me this isn’t one you want to pass up. This is not the place where you think about calories and say “no thank you”. Take the bread, eat it with the butter (a must) and try hard not to ask for another (kudos to me for the unintentional rhyme – p.s. I’m all for finding reasons to give yourself a compliment haha).
