Sushi Masu

The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:

Orgasmic.
Everything is absolutely delicious! This has definitely become my go-to sushi spot when I’m in town.

The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:

Sushi Masu is a small restaurant situated on busy Westwood Blvd. There are about six tables and 10 bar chairs. Every time I go I sit at the bar and order with Chef Masu. My dad has been going for a while and when he took me, I instantly fell in love. Not only is the staff nice, but Chef Masu is funny. I always walk out of dinner smiling – and very full might I add. If you engage with him he’ll and engage with you and trust me you’ll have a good time. He makes jokes and we’re always laughing with him. The place gets busy during peak dining hours, but even with a larger party at the bar, I have never had to wait too long.

What we ate:

  • Shishito Peppers
  • Yellowtail nigiri
  • Salmon nigiri
  • Albacore nigiri
  • Tuna nigiri
  • Toro nigiri
  • Clam nigiri
  • Scallops nigiri
  • Uni
  • Butter fish
  • Oysters
  • Tuna with crispy rice

Not everything is marked with a price, but expect to spend around $75 per person (it can be less depending on what you order). I know omakase starts at $40 – if you want to go that route.

I won’t go through each individual piece of sushi, but I’ll give you my favorites. I love that Sushi Masu is always consistent and always super fresh. I know I’m getting top quality sushi and it tastes delicious. I don’t have anything bad to say, I honestly love dining here and I know you’ll love it too.For nigiri my all stars are toro, salmon, albacore, yellowtail, red snapper and scallops. Not only is everything always buttery and amazing, but they also serve good portion sizes (aka I don’t feel like I’m getting gypped).

My other all-time favorites are the oysters – WOW these oysters give me life. Honestly, they are so good! They are flavorful, super fresh and amazing!

Sushi Masu also makes a great crispy rice with tuna. This is very different than Koi (my first love), but it’s delicious in its own right. They give you a much bigger bed of rice and tuna on top with mayo, mango, avocado, cilantro and some bell peppers. The result is an amazingly moist yet crispy treat. It’s delicious and feels substantial.

Another great order is uni – this is probably one of the best I have had. It doesn’t have an awkward aftertaste, but instead just tastes really fresh, giving me a chance to actually enjoy the true flavor.

At the end of the meal, he always gives you a little complimentary fruit (in some cases a small masterpiece – see picture) to finish off your meal. It’s a nice touch and a great way to end an orgasmic meal.I will be back again and again. As a matter of fact, I’ll be there sometime July 4th weekend – because I’m actually salivating writing this review.
