My last trip to L.A. extended into Monday, so naturally I took that opportunity to find a great brunch spot.
The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:
Some of the best French toast I have ever had!
Mon – Sun 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:
My mom, Dennis and I decided to have brunch at Square One Dining last Monday and we were not disappointed. Well, originally I was excited about getting the French toast and coercing my mom into getting the chorizo dish, but they didn’t have it that day. The French toast, however, more than made up for it. The restaurant is sort of out of the way for us, but the drive wasn’t too bad and we were seated as soon as we got there. They have inside seating and patio seating. Considering the heat wave that has taken over Los Angeles, we chose patio seating. It was simple with just the right amount of plants. Our server was friendly and we were attended to right away.
What we ate (and drank):
- Tea ($3.25)
- Coffee ($3.50)
- Chai tea latte ($4.75)
- Buttermilk pancakes ($9)
- French toast – bourbon pecan ($14.25)
- French toast – bacon caramel ($13.50)
- Canadian bacon ($2.75)
Both the boyfriend and I ordered French toast (what’s new?), but we ordered 2 different toppings. I ordered the bourbon-pecan and he ordered the bacon-enriched caramel sauce. My French toast was made with brioche bread topped with bourbon pecans and vanilla whipped cream. One order comes with four slices, which is more than filling! Dennis wanted the bacon-enriched caramel sauce, which is actually a pancake option, but they were happy to oblige. The first bite sent me ooo-ing and ahh-ing – the crunch of the nuts, the fresh whipped cream and the spongy-ness of the bread. However, when I took a bite of Dennis’ French toast, I was on a 1 person rocket straight to heaven. This is probably the best French toast I have had. I will say, though, that the title is a bit misleading because it makes it seem like there is only bacon flavor in the sauce. The French toast comes with large bacon chunks sprinkled on top and the caramel sauce on the side. The two together are the definition of orgasmic. I just can’t even explain how in love I was. The pancakes were good too: fluffy, moist, and flavorful, but if you had to choose only one thing, don’t bother with anything other than the French toast… love at first bite! The Canadian bacon, while tasty, was small; a piece smaller than the palm of my hand was almost $3. Other than that, everything was perfect. The chai tea latte was great and the tea was organic.
