Restaurant Reviews

November 24, 2014

I had an ice-cream date with my cousin in Ghirardelli Square and since as I got there early and was hungry, I decided to try a sandwich from Michaelis. It was recommended to me by an employee at Patagonia (I stopped there before deciding what to eat). I had my eye on Black Point Café but their kitchen was closed.

The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:

Good, not great.
Decent prices, but it was a very average sandwich.
*Take out only

Sun – Thurs 8 am – 11 pm
Fri – Sat 8 am – 2 am

The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:

The deli is located inside a liquor store on the corner of North Point and Larkin Street. The place seems clean enough and the people are friendly. The deli area is small so I don’t know if it is hard to order when the lunch crowd comes in, but since there were only 2 other people ordering sandwiches, mine came out within five minutes. I was in between the Giants sandwich and the North Beach, the guy making the sandwiches said that the Giants was by far the best, so I decided to take his word.

What I ate:

  • Giants sandwich ($7.50)

I know the SF Giants are the best, but this sandwich left something to be desired. I love pastrami because it is so flavorful and filling, this sandwich though, was a little tasteless. The pastrami flavor was very subtle and the other elements of the sandwich – Swiss cheese, jalapeños, lettuce, mayo, mustard and bacon didn’t make up for the lack of taste. In fact, I couldn’t taste the bacon at all.

I wasn’t expecting the best sandwich of my life, but something a little heartier with a nice burst of flavor would have been appreciated. If you are in the area looking for something on the cheaper side this isn’t a total miss, but I’m sure there is better. If you’re going to try Michaelis out, I would suggest ordering a different sandwich.

Tomorrow I will review an orgasmic Italian restaurant (in L.A.), stay tuned!
