L.A. Fruit stands

December 3, 2015
I am back! I apologize for my long absence (I have never gone this long without blogging and trust me it feels weird). For those that don’t follow me on Twitter or Instagram – I was celebrating my 25th birthday in Argentina. I rounded up Dennis and my whole family for a nice vacation and considering this is the first international family trip we’ve taken in over 10 years I had to soak it all in. I’m back and ready to share all my travel tips and itineraries with you! While I organize my thoughts, unpack, and get back to work I thought I would start with a fun blog post. This is not one particular place, but rather a type of food that I make sure to get every time I’m in LA.
The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:
Can you make it at home? Yes. Is it ever as good? NO!
The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:

If you’re still confused, I am talking about those glorious rainbow umbrellas that cover what I like to call “homies”. In other words the fruit stands that appear on most corners of Los Angeles streets. Why they have only infiltrated LA so heavily I’ll never know… SF needs love too you know?!? Anyways I’m not sure why I have come to call them “homies” probably because they are everywhere and anyone who has something that good should be my friend.

What we ate:

  • Fruit container ($5)

These stands are full of various fruits: pineapple, mango, watermelon, orange, coconut, and even cucumber. They cut them up for you and cover them with lime, chili powder and salt. Trust me you want to get all three! The spicy, tangy and sweet flavor is amazing. For $5 you can’t go wrong with a healthy and delicious mid-day snack. Perfect for the quintessential warm LA day, I make sure to grab one every time I’m in town. My favorite is watermelon, mango, pineapple and cucumber. The best part? At the end when you’re done with all the fruit, you MUST drink the juice that has gathered at the bottom of the container. My siblings and I literally fight over it haha.

Tip: If there are two stands close to each other I’ll choose the one with the best looking fruit. They are usually from 2 different companies if they are that close so the fruit selection will be different.
