A few weeks ago Dennis, another couple and I visited Dirty Habit, a bar on the fifth floor of the Palomar Hotel in SOMA.
The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:
The food was great, the atmosphere was fun and OH MY… the smoked honey butter is what dreams are made of! (Cue the music: Pablo and Isabella “this is what dreams are made of”. Yes I just made a Lizzie McGuire reference – get on board).
The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:
We arrived on a Saturday at 7pm without reservations and were able to snag a table (it was available until 9pm). They were booked through the night in all areas of the restaurant so I do suggest making a reservation. The bar is first come, first served so if you are only 2 people, this is definitely an option. What drew me to this place was the outdoor seating area, it was a cold night and they were booked, but I will definitely be back as SF starts to warm up.
The vibe is very laid back and the service was good, it wasn’t too loud which I really liked! Their tables near the bar are long enough to accommodate a group (which is nice since bars always seem to forget that option). Their menu is made up of several small plates ranging from $3 – 35 each (most in the $12 – 15 range). They have a good mix of vegetable, fish and meat dishes.
Dinner Mon – Sat 5pm – 10pm
Bar Mon – Sat 5pm – close
What we ate:
- Spice nuts ($3)
- Baguette ($3)
- Halibut ceviche ($15)
- Grilled prawns ($16)
- DH burger ($18)
- Black cod ($14)
I will keep this review short and sweet since there are so many smaller menu items. I would recommend all the dishes we ordered, I particularly loved the bread, it was warm and the smoked honey butter was DELICIOUS! I also really enjoyed the shrimp, they were well cooked and very flavorful. The cod was definitely on the smaller side (I realize everything was, but this was a bit hard to really taste even with four people only getting 1 bite). With that said, I really liked the flavor! The hamachi ceviche was very tasty as well. I was impressed with all the dishes. Dirty Habit takes bar food to the next level. I will advise that if you come hungry, be prepared to order multiple dishes. I was starving and after sharing everything with 3 other people I left satisfied, but not full.
