The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:
The French toast itself is worthy of a “Winner” rating.
The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:
I have heard a lot about Canele and wanted to give it a try. I mean, hello, I am on a hunt for every amazing French toast in LA (list coming soon). I walked in around 10:15am (earliest I’ve ever shown up to brunch) and we got seated right away (it was already pretty packed). The service was attentive and our waitress was very nice. I don’t know if it was because I wasn’t feeling 100% that day or if it was as bad as I think, but the smell inside became a bit much. We were seated in the back and the collection of the meats being cooked and little ventilation left me a little overwhelmed.
Sat – Sun 10am – 3pm
Wed – Fri 11am – 3pm
Tues – Thurs, Sun 5pm – 10pm
Fri – Sat 5pm – 10:30pm
What we ate:
- French Toast ($14)
- Ricotta Coffee Cake ($6)
- Fried Chicken Sandwich ($15)
We ordered the coffee cake on a whim and trust me the description doesn’t do it justice. I pictured a cake with coffee flavored crumbles on top (you know, the usual). Instead, I got a rich, flavorful poundcake with the bet home-made whipped cream on top and a side of espresso. You pour the espresso over the cake and get the best tasting coffee cake I’ve ever had. This is an excellent choice and I’d highly recommend it!
I had to include more than one picture – I was actually going to leave a 3rd and 4th in, but I spared you. First off, it’s not the easiest capturing a decent photo because it doesn’t exactly have Sqirl’s photogenic qualities, but as soon as you take a bite, you won’t care. This is the juiciest and largest French toast I’ve ever had. It’s also one of the best in LA (like I said, list coming soon). I don’t know if much else is any good, but I would come back again and again for the coffee cake and French toast. The prunes add a whole new level of interesting. You only need the smallest piece, but the burst of flavor is sensational. Share or don’t (I won’t judge), but just make sure you try it!
I only had a bite of this because it’s what my aunt ordered and I was so mesmerized with my French toast (I also, like I said, wasn’t feeling too great). It wasn’t anything special – I was expecting the typical fried chicken and inside it was breaded. The chicken pieces were too thick and there was so much bread. Overall, it just wasn’t that great.
