The Shut-Up-and-Give-it-to-Me-Quick Version:
Good not Great.
Between the ridiculously long wait to get our food and the taste, I was thoroughly unimpressed – disappointed, in fact.
The I-Like-to-be-Wrapped-Up-in-All-the-Details Version:
With the awards and accolades Boulevard has received, I was expecting a very tasty meal. We had a reservation, were seated immediately and the service was good. Our meal took a turn when we waited an hour between appetizers and entrees. The restaurant was not packed and there seemed to be plenty of people in the kitchen.
Mon – Fri 11:30am – 2:15pm
Sun – Thurs 5:30pm – 10pm
Fri – Sat 5:30pm – 10:30pm
What I ate/drank:
- Cucumber Gimlet ($14)
- Crispy Squah Blossom ($13)
- Seared Royal Sweet Scallops ($30)
I really enjoyed my cocktail… and the praises stop there. Cucumber drinks are risky because while I love the taste, most places don’t take the time to actually muddle a real cucumber. Cucumber sodas and cucumber flavored alcohol is NOT the same! Boulevard went traditional and muddled up an ACTUAL cucumber – the difference is more than noticeable. I would go back and sit at the bar for this drink. The location of the restaurant is really nice (offering a view of the bay bridge) so the ambiance is worth my return.
The appetizer, however, was just okay. I love squash blossoms and if you fry them they are even better, but I felt like this lacked flavor. It was pretty bland and there wasn’t enough yogurt mint sauce. The flavors blended all together and provided no excitement.
Although I don’t have any complaints, I also don’t have great things to say. The risotto didn’t provide much flavor and while the scallops were cooked well, it was underwhelming. Nothing special and not something I would order again.
